OPERATION: F.I.S.H. (Food Information Shelter Health)

Phase I – “Train the Trainer”

Course Synopsis

This is a training course in which participants will take an active role in developing or improving their basic leadership skills.  It is a 16-hour course conducted during a two-day period.  It contains six individual modules, each emphasizing special skills and techniques, building on each other.

What will the participants learn?

“Situational Personalities” illustrates people are different from each other and the differences are probably good…not bad.  This helps them understand themselves and others by giving them insight into the reason they act and react the way they do to various situations.  Once participants have learned about their own personalities and their own styles and preferences, they can then appreciate the preferences of other people.  This module includes several adult learning activities to include; taking a personality inventory, participating in case studies, as well as participating in group discussions.

“Situational Leadership” refers to results based leadership training which concentrates on developing or reinforcing basic leadership skills or traits.  Participants will discuss four styles of leadership based on the followers’ development level.  Participants will be required to demonstrate the acquired skills by various activities built into the module.  This includes participating in a simulation game at the conclusion of the module.

“Communication” concentrates on improving communication skills.  These skills are vital to the leader’s role when dealing with diverse people.  Participants learn the ways people communicate both verbally and non-verbally as well as the art of active listening.  This module includes several communication group activities to include active listening role-play and group discussions.

“Team Building” examines how good teams work together, including the processes involved in building and strengthening good teams.  This module includes several group activities to include role-playing, individuals and group assessments of various scenarios.

“Human Diversity” is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities to enable them to value and utilize the diversity which exists in the communities they serve.  By viewing “people differences” as assets as opposed to liabilities, participants will be better able to tailor their response to the need of the individuals served, maximizing, resources and reducing the possibility of interactions that can negatively impact the community relations.

Participants are actively involved in the learning process during the 16-hours of instruction.  They will complete a series of practical exercises, individual role playing exercises, and team decision-making exercises.  The participants will graduate as facilitators and take these same modules back to their committees, faith base groups & individuals and / or organizations to guide them though the training.  After Phase I is completed within the facilitators organizations, Operation: F.I.S.H. will come back and begin Phase II of the 3 Phase training program.
