Get Ready Now!
One weekend a year host a National Get Ready Now! weekend, similar to National Night Out, but for a weekend. On Friday night there could be an educational movie or show of some kind on a sponsoring network television. One day of the weekend (probably Saturday) could be dedicated to personal preparidness with families and friends working together to create preparidness kits for themselves and their pets. Stores could give discounts on emergency items like napsacks, flash drives, first aid kits, water storage containers, etc. Maybe cities could waive taxes on these items throughout the weekend. On a second day of the two day weekend (maybe Sunday), neighborhood associations would sponsor "clean up" events. In Houston, folks could work together to clean out some of the creeks which are prone to flooding during a hurricane or other incliment weather. In Houston, the educational piece on Friday night could be interviews with OEM on how to prepare an emergency evacuation kit, someone from the SPCA on how to prepare a pet evacuation kit and someone from County Flood Control talking about items people need to clean out a creek (garbage bags, big boots, watch out for snakes, etc.) A different neighborhood or area of the country can opt to trim or remove trees that are dangerous in a storm. Sunday or Sunday night could be a neighborhood potluck dinner to assess neighborhood resources (is someone a physician or nurse, who knows CPR, how many CERT volunteers live in the neighborhood, how many people have chainsaws and generators, is there an elderly person who will need assistance, do neighbors want to have emergency contact numbers for each other, create a place to have a community bulliten board after the storm is over or the event has calmed down but electricity has not been restored, should the neighborhood elect someone to serve as a coordinator or information distribution person etc.) PS - I don't have a photo of this activity so am sending photo of my dog since this site won't take my suggestion without a photo.
