Re-Localization

Re-localization is our goal, with all the talk of sustainability, few seem to understand that it is synonymous with Disaster Resiliency. A self sufficient community is better positioned to 'weather' the impacts of a disaster.   Because true disaster resiliency is based on many inter-related factors, our goal is to focus on the common interests  of our diverse community.  Mitigating the effects of disasters requires a spectrum of skills and an infrastructure and population that is educated, prepared and that feels competent to handle the myriad of needs created. By focusing on a long term perspective, versus short term we will be better able to create a vibrant, healthy 'new normal' post disaster.  We have already begun teaming with leaders in the community.  Our first project, the creation of a Food Shed has just started and has already demonstrated the fantastic community building an effort like this can create.   Our other projects will bolster the Survivor Mentality of our community.  Classes that focus on Leadership, Empathy Building, Creativity and Competency Training will be part of the campaign.  Additionally, actively supporting those organizations within the community whose missions and projects encourage the above traits are already a part of the culture of our community.   Projects:
  • Creating a 'Disaster Aware' culture through; classes, presentations and projects based on: Local Natural Hazards, Energy Descent, Climate Change, Water Scarcity and Food Security. These classes will assist in the promotion of the 'Re-Skilling' classes listed below.
  • Creating a cadre of trainers from the ranks of our older adults, capitalizing on their wealth of knowledge, insight and experience.  Drawing these individuals in to teach classes in their areas of expertise will not only engage this segment of our population, but will greatly benefit the entire community.  Re-Skilling classes could include: simple construction/repair techniques and carpentry; canning and preserving; sewing; farming with horses; bread making; soap making, etc
  • Continue creating Food Sheds
  • Other projects that support the goals of the campaign
We are already working with an incredibly diverse range of folks with a goal to incorporate additional leaders including but certainly not limited to: Transition Town members (AKA 'Peakers'), Permaculturalists, Small Businesses, Economic development professionals and supporters, Left/Right and Center Political types, Environmentalists, faith-based/humanitarian and civic organizations and more!  Focusing on the common goal of re-localization, allows us to work around the incredibly divergent reasons people may be motivated to work toward this goal.   Our campaign will help remind people that they can make a difference, will encourage them to re-engage with their government and their neighbors and will demonstrate the positive results  of all of the above (reduced crime, increase economic activity, a healthy population and a vibrant environment just to name a few).
