Be part of something greater then yourself

When we look at disasters we always see one common thing.  I am not talking about the news media showing the aftermath of the actual emergency or the disaster.  We have all witnessed first hand accounts of how bad things can really get when they hit thanks to 24 hour news outlets.  I am not saying this is always a bad thing, because the first thing that people want when something happens is information.  No I am talking about everyone coming together to help one another when an disastor strikes.  It is this true sense of community that is the untold true story that never gets the attention it deserves.  Alot of time FEMA will get the blame for things that may just be out of its control.  FEMA is a federal agency that steps in when local and state OEM cannot handle the situation, or it may be so great that they need to assistance of the federal government.  But in order for an effective emergency plan to work, its the community that needs to be involved more then anyone else.  So what can you do to help.  Thats easy you can first Be Ready!  Almost everyone has a few extra cans of food, clothing and supplies that are never used.  Make your own personal supply kit just like the ready.gov website recomends.  Its a very easy thing to do, and it may just save your life.  Keep one in your car, keep one in your home.  Your first prority during an actual emergency is to take care of yourself first!  And your family of course.  And if you have a pet, dont forget about them either.  Sometimes first responders may not be able to get to you, and if you loose power or other basics that we take for granted you can atleast have some peace of mind to know ok I will be ok on my own for a few days.  After you know that your ok and your family is safe, check on your family friends neighbors etc.  Be part of something greater then just yourself, and help your community anyway you can.  But I must stress do not try and be a hero, first responders are trained to handle almost any kind of situation dont become a part of the problem.  But if you do want to help join CERT.  CERT is a great way to help your community in its time of need.  Again first responders are trained in alot of different things.  But when you look at a commuity based response group you have people from all walks of life.  Your CERT group may have a doctor, construction worker, nurse, and many other jobs or careers that when put together in a group have the capability to perform jobs that others may not know how to do.  You can also help with non-profit community groups like the Red-Cross.  And the best part about it, is that its free!  You dont have to pay anything to be part of these groups.  So step up to the plate, be part of something better then yourself.  Help yourself first and foremost, then work together to help get your community back on its feet.
