community garden
We all know that right after a disaster you have a window of hours to put people and resources in place to get things moving in the right direction. We also know after seeing the chaos in Haiti that there is just so much that any institution can do in the case of a disaster. What is needed is to first get teams of people in to assess the situation, to gather the necessary resources that are available and then show the people how to start to rebuild their community. My thoughts are this. Give them the information and the tools to rebuild shelter filter and desalinate water to take what resources are readily available to move forward. There are only so many meals that any government entity can hand out. After that the community should be able to have rebuilt enough whether it is with container gardens or earth gardens to start producing their own sources of sustainable food. This is where I suggest that sealed cans of seeds be gathered to be handed out in such a situation so that the area's affected can start the process of self sustainability right away.
A good plan ahead of time is always the best choice. to make publications available online or in paper is the best way to stimulate people to think ahead at preparation for any sort of disaster from dust storms to hurricanes, tornado's to floods everyone should know the ways to plan ahead.
