Online Updates by CalFire During Wildfire Events
During the summer of 2008, the Town of Paradise, California, experienced a wildland fire that destroyed many homes, resulted in massive evacuations, and disrupted normal life for the coummunity for many days. Trying to get up-to-the-minute details about events was very difficult. Private citizens set up an online discussion board to share information with each other, but it became difficult to control rumors and errors. By the time the local news channels reported the news, it was hours old. With the technology available today, the information officers within the CalFire organization should broadcast a continuing stream of up-to-the-minute information, available to people with computers and data phones, and receive and answer questions from concerned people. There is no reason that I cannot receive this information directly from CalFire, instead of having to rely upon a town office, a newspaper, or a TV or radio station to pass on the information they are told at a CalFire update press conference. Communicating critical information about evacuations, road closures, fire containment, traffic issues, medical help, etc in a timely manner to all citizens MUST be a priority within CalFire in the future. The technology is available. Please use it.
