Many areas around the state and country have military bases near by.  Those bases usually store tons of MRE's for use during deployment.  If an evacuation is ordered pallets of MRE's can be placed at evacuation locations for people.  The MRE has almost 3000 calories (or more than a full days calories in a single package).  The military is constantly rotating their stock to maintain self-lifes.  The United States routinely sends MRE's to countries like Haiti after major disasters.  The instructions printed on the side of each package are written at a 7th grade reading level and can be followed with little help.  This is food ready to go during an emergency and has already been paid for the Federal Government and your tax dollars.
