Educate those in areas prone to disaster of the steps that can be taken to have the best experience amid the storm. Give examples of food that can be kept fresh without power, food that can be prepared with a fire, and/or ways to just plain survive and cook wild animals if in desperate need of food

Further, educate folks to have a cash emergency fund of at least 6 months of income to live off of. This should cover them while displaced for the time being.

With basic knowledge of how to survive amid destruction, people will feel more prepared and comfortable when a storm comes.
