Communication Hubs

In the City of Seattle, we are trying out a concept of information and resource exchange between neighborhoods and also with the City of Seattle.

We use General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) to speak with other "Hubs" in the neighborhood and other communities.  We have three GMRS repeaters throughout the city.  After initial financial help by the city, the other communities have purchased their own equipment from their own resources.

Besides radios, the hubs post requests for resources and also if they have resources to share on boards and post announcements from the city on white boards.

At a central point in each sub community, we tie-in with Ham Radio Operators assigned by the city (Auxiliary Communication Service - ACS) to be a formal connection.

This was a pilot with three communities in Seattle and has grown to six with more asking for information about the Hubs monthly.

All of the communities have their respective leaders.  They come together once a month as "Hub Caps" to discuss overarching issues and help those just starting with advice and guidance.  This monthly meeting is held at the City Emergency Operation Center and has a city EOC team member as it's advisor.

The "Hub Concept" has been existence for about 2 ½ years. Everyone in the communication hubs is totally volunteer.  We have a lot of energy going forward into 2011. Please contact our group if you would like to emulate the Hub Concept.
